Feel Empowered With These Quotes From Oprah's Book, What I Know For Sure

Born into poverty in rural Mississippi, Oprah Winfrey’s story is definitive proof that you can manifest your dreams into reality.  Today Oprah is regarded as the most influential women in the world and is ranked the richest African-American of the 21th century. She is also one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time with a net worth of $3 billion.

What I Know For Sure is a compilation of Oprah’s monthly columns shared in her magazine over the past 14 years’. The book is a great source of inspiring and empowering life lessons for every aspect of your life. Ask yourself what you know for sure, Winfrey says and ‘what you’ll find along the way will be fantastic, because what you’ll find will be yourself.’

What I know for sure is that this book offers great advice from someone that has faced extreme adversity yet made a great success in her life and has still managed to stay grounded. I thought I would share some snippets of the book that stuck with me.

Joy

Make an effort to do something good for someone everyday

Pleasure is energy reciprocated. What you put in comes back.

Who would you become if you finally got to do the things you’ve always wanted to?

If your life were to end tomorrow, would there be certain things that you would regret not doing? Would you be spending your time the same way? Regardless of whether you succeed or fail, your journey begins with a choice to follow your own path – you are the single biggest influencer in your life. Live fully, get up and step up.

Try read as much as you can.

Reading stretches your mind and perspective. Oprah considers reading to be a ‘sacred indulgence that gives you the ability to reach higher ground.’

Resilience

Every choice gives you a chance to pave your own road

Don’t waste your time holding other people accountable for your happiness. You must be fearless enough to give yourself the love you didn't receive. Leave the past behind and make yourself whole. Keep moving. Full speed ahead.

What would you do if weren’t afraid?

If you are ever faced with a difficult question then ask yourself: what would I do if I were not afraid of making a mistake, feeling rejected, looking foolish or being alone? The answer to your question will appear when you eliminate the fear of failure. As you face fear head on, your deepest struggle will often produce your greatest strength.

Who you are meant to be evolves from where you are right now

If you can see obstacles for what they are then you will never lose faith in the journey it takes to get you where you want to go. Appreciate your lessons and mistakes. They are stepping stones to the future.

Problems will build tenacity, courage, discipline and determination

Can you think of the instants throughout your life that have hurt or scared you? The chances are you have had a few. Yet here you are, still standing. Strength is built on challenges, adversity, resistance and pain.

Connection

Pets represent a connection to caring that is unconditional

There is nothing like a love that animals have for their humans.

Love is everlasting

The one thing that will have lasting value is if we’ve loved others and whether they have loved us. The to-do lists, emails and meetings are just small minutiae in the bigger scheme of things.

Gratitude

The more grateful you become, the more you have to be grateful for

It isn’t to be grateful all the time. It’s in the moments when you feel least thankful that you are most in need of what gratitude can give you: perspective. In being grateful, you change your energy from negative to positive. Rather than expelling your energy being frustrated, appreciate.

In the best and worst times, I know for sure that this life is a gift

Possibility

The ultimate measure of courage is not whether you reach a goal – it’s if you decide to get back on your feet no matter how many times you’ve failed

When you dare step out, speak up, change yourself, or simply do something outside of what others call the norm, the results may not always be pleasant. People may feel the need to tell you who you cannot become and what you cannot do. It is in these moments that self-doubt may creep in but always bear in mind that the alternatives are even worse. In years to come you may be obsessing over what might have been. What would my life have been like if I hadn't cared so much about what people thought? When you realise that you have nothing to prove to anyone except yourself then you can live without fear and keep aiming for your best life. In this very moment, exactly where you are, you are a single choice away from a new beginning.

Never dull your shine

You are built not to shrink down to less but to blossom into more. To be more splendid. To be more extraordinary. To use every moment to fill yourself up.

Follow your passion

If you can get paid for doing what you love, every paycheque is a bonus. Give yourself a bonus of a lifetime: Pursue your passion. Discover what you love. Then go for it!

Work hard – very hard

Move in the direction of your goal with all the force and verve you can muster- then let go, releasing your plan to the Power that’s bigger than yourself and allowing your dream to unfold as its own masterpiece.

Awe

The joy of learning well is the greatest reward

Everyday holds within it the possibility of seeing the world with wonder. There’s a wealth that has nothing to do with dollars, that comes from the perspective and wisdom of paying attention to your life.

Clarity

Surround yourself with people who have good energy

How you spend your time defines who you are. Your energy is a precious resource that should not be wasted on people with dark energies.

More things don’t make you feel more alive

Yet feeling alive is part of fulfilling your true self. It’s the reason we’re all here.

Power

The right to choose your own path is a sacred privilege. Use it. Dwell in possibility

Give your best in every situation

By giving your best then you have no reason to judge yourself and create guilt and shame. Live so at the end of each day, you can say ‘I did my very best’.

‘Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Make a decision and watch your life move forward.’

When your life is on course with its purpose you are at your most powerful and though you may stumble you will not fall.

You lead life; it doesn't lead you

If you think there is something missing in your life or you’re getting what you deserve, remember that there’s no yellow brick road.
